My wants < Other's needs

My child's heart for Jesus and others never ceases to amaze me. Last night, Easton asked me if we could "have a little talk". If you know my child, you know that means he is up to something. Haha!

He said, " Momma. . .I want to give away my skateboard."

I thought. . .okay, where is this going?? See, Easton has wanted a skateboard for a while now. I have always been concerned for my somewhat clumsy son (gets it honest from this gal right here) to ride a skateboard. But I finally let my helicopter momma instincts slide a little and agreed to let him get one. IF he saved up his money though and bought it himself. And that's just what he did. It took him some weeks to get enough saved because he had already been putting a portion of his allowance up to buy flip flops each week. But a couple of weeks ago - he finally had enough to get the skateboard. Boy, was he excited! So to hear that he wanted to give it away was a shocker. . .until he told me why. . .

He said, "You remember that lady with no legs that Daddy met on the street in Guatemala? The one in the video? Do you think she could use my skateboard instead of that piece of cardboard? I think it might help her get around. . .But we might need to get her a girl helmet. Think we can do that?"

My emotions went from shock to awe, pride, and then guilt all in less than a minute. To have such a passion to help others. . .at such a young age. . . to put others NEEDS in front of your own WANTS. . . How often do we do that, folks? Honestly. . .not nearly enough. Because if we did , I truly believe that this world would be a much different place. Please don't think I'm on some high horse. . .Remember that feeling of guilt I mentioned earlier? I'm preaching to the choir too here.

I say all that to say this. . .there are so many - so, so many NEEDS in this world. . .would you be willing to give up some of your WANTS for someone else's need?

Easton has inspired me, challenged me to really consider if my own want could meet someone else's need. . . It's truly amazing when God uses your child to remind you to put others first.

". . .keep remembering that our Master said, 'You're far happier giving than getting.'" Acts 20:35 MSG
